You are not alone!

blueball.gif (2478 bytes) 70 million Americans are chronically sleep deprived
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Approximately 20 million have at least partial blockage of their airways, causing snoring
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Over one billion people suffer from chronic nasal congestion or snoring & sleep apnea on earth
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) About 12 million Americans have some degree of sleep apnea
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) 40% of all adults experience some type of sleep disorder
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) 50% of all adults report trouble sleeping

Of 6700 patients evaluated in our center we found the following interesting data (Source of the following information is “The Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, August 2002 issue, pages 333-350 - A chapter in snoring and sleep apnea by Dr. Mansoor Madani”

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)  If you are only 20 Lbs over weight your chance of being snorer is 90% more
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) If your neck size is more than 17 inches (42 cm) you have greater potential to be snorer
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Only 30% of all people snore at age 30.  This rate increases to 45% after age 55
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) 85% of snoring people are not aware of their snoring and in fact believe that they are great sleepers!
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) The ratio of snoring men versus women in our study was 9:1
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Men were more over weight
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Men had larger neck size
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Women had larger airway and smaller uvula
blueball.gif (2478 bytes)  Hormones may have something to play as well
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) In our studies we found that when it comes to treating snoring when comparing women versus men the ratio is women are 9 times more willing to take care of their problems more often than men
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) 85% of men also denied having snoring problem, and considered their wives “a light sleeper!”
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Only 6% of children snore at a young age and that could be related to an enlarged tonsil or adenoids.
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Another interesting finding in our study was that snoring women are on average shorter and heavier than non-snoring women.
blueball.gif (2478 bytes) Women’s snoring sound originate more often in their nose than their mouth (based on our studies published in the Clinics Of North America, August 2002)

And Not Much Is Being Done

 Interesting Numbers From Our Research

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

Despite the availability of effective treatment, 70% of poor sleepers have not discussed their difficulties with a healthcare professional

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

Only 1.5 million persons with sleep apnea - less than 10% of those with this problem  - have received any kind of treatment

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

In a recent study of how 10 experienced primary care practitioners took their patients' medical history, 95% failed to ask questions about sleep

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

In a study conducted by Dr. Madani in PA of 100 dentist surveyed no one asked their patients about snoring or sleep apnea

Sleep Apnea: What Happens

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

When you have apnea simply you stop breathing.  Most people with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10-40 seconds each incident.  Try to do that right now and see what happens.  Try repeating 40-50 times per hour then you will understand how sleep apnea can kill you!

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

In mild cases, this occurs 5-20 times per hour; in severe cases, 20 times or more

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

Some apnea patients have as many as 500 apnea episodes a night

Social and Economic Costs

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

38,000 people die each year from complications caused by sleep apnea

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

Sleep disorders cost the U.S. economy $46 billion a year in lost productivity

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

People with sleep apnea suffer strokes 3-6 times more often than other Americans

Auto Accidents: Unsafe At Any Speed

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

The Department of Transportation estimates that 200,000 reported vehicular accidents and 40,000 injuries may be sleep related

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

As many as 1,500 deaths are caused by sleep deprivation

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

Various studies suggest that up to 74% of apnea patients have had one or more auto accidents attributed to drowsiness at the wheel

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

In one study, 15 patients who suffered from sleep apnea were tested for driving. They ran off the road 101 times; the 10 people in the control group did this only twice.

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

It is believed that some sleep apnic patients are more dangerous than a drunk driver

blueball.gif (2478 bytes)

People suffering from sleep apnea are six times more likely to be involved in a car crash (as a result of drowsiness) than those without sleep disorders. (New England Journal of Medicine, March 18, 1999)
